As has been the case in the past, I think I'll wait and see what the actual report says. The difference between Kay's interim report and its media "interpretation" were quite significant.
The usual naive liberal faith in the omniscient Hans Blix oozes out of this article. Yeah, that Blix, the same guy who completely missed the massive Iraqi nuclear weapons program prior to the Gulf War.
Please try and remember that this same "effective" United Nations inspection process is currently accomplishing jack shit in preventing nuclear weapons development in Iran, and up until recently, was accomplishing exactly that in keeping Libya from doing the same. Then there's North Korea. Frankly, unless a nation chooses to cooperate (like South Africa did and Libya has now done (maybe), the U.N. is pretty much impotent in preventing WMD development.
I see absolutely no reason to believe the U.N. would have been any more effective in keeping Iraq under control over the next twenty years.
The most dangerous weapon of mass destruction in Iraq was found, and currently occupies a jail cell.
Meanwhile, Syria, until recently a member of the U.N. Human Rights Commission, is helping test WMD on human victims in Sudan, a current member of that same body. So it goes in the United Nations, the proclaimed moral pinnacle of our planet.
Just for the record, my own calculations show that using standard 55-gallon drums and off-the-shelf storage racks, 500 tons of a liquid the density of water could be stored in a space (or a hole) sixty feet on a side and ten feet high.
