If you want America to surrender [because that is another way to stop a war] on any conflict it is involved in and you are imagining that the US is a superpower, you are encouraging global warfare*.
First: Invasion is not the only or the best way to enforce a cease-fire. In fact, war can be considered the Anti-Cease-Fire.
Second: Who has to imagine the US is a superpower? It is.
Third: I have said here before, now that we have made the mess, we are obliged to clean it up. Whether four more years of Bush and his military geniuses who overrule the commanders in the field (think Fallujah) will leave us in any shape to do that is another question, and one I'd rather not have to live through.
Regarding the cougar tracks: What we have done is fire a howitzer in the direction in which the cougar tracks seemed to be headed. It's hit several houses, and it turns out that there was no cougar, just a very clever fraud perpetrated by somebody who doesn't like our cat.
