It was a day or so before Halloween the year George Bush Sr. was running against Clinton and Ronald Reagan came to town to do some stumping. At our work, we were allowed to come in costume. I had on this great mask of the Big Bad Wolf and my boss came dressed as a Rastafarian. The rally was near our office downtown in a park and Kevin and I went down there in our costumes. From what we could tell, we were the only ones there in costume and stuck out like sore thumbs. You could see the secret service guys pinging on us as soon as we entered the park.
The rally began with our version of Foghorn Leghorn, now Congressman J.D. Hayworth, getting up to introduce the speakers. At this point in time he was still only a really bad sportscaster in the valley. When Reagan got up to speak, it was pretty clear that he didn't have much in the way of mental capacity left. He was stumbling over words and seemed almost to be an audio-animatronic version of himself. Well Kevin and I, stuck by the absurdity of it all, did our best to ensure that the secret service noticed us by doing these grand and humorous gestures every time the audience applauded. You could see these guys getting really nervous. I really expected them to come over and escort us out. It was a very surreal experience.
Of course these days you'd never get within 1000 yards of a Bush/Cheney rally and would have to undergo a loyalty oath, lie detector test, and full cavity search to be let in.
