About 5 years ago, we had a hotly contested race for district justice. One of the supporters of the incumbent put up a HUGE sign on the fence surrounding his property, which happened to front on a heavily-travelled portion of a state route. The opposition objected, but size was the only violation, not location. So a slightly smaller sign replaced the enormous one.
Mysteriously, a van turned up, parked right in front of the new sign, obscuring its content. The van belonged to a prominent supporter of the opponent. He was issued a warning for parking in a no parking zone, and directed to move the van or it would be towed. The next day, the owner of the van cited vandalism, to wit, a flattened tire, which prevented him from moving the van. He claimed that the incumbent's supporters vandalized his vehicle.
Two problems with this assertion:
-It was too dumb to be believed.
-Someone was observed walking away from the van in the dead of night the night the tire was flattened. (It was only one tire, btw, and a straight puncture, easily plugged.) The someone was followed by another person, and lo! it was the van's owner, miles and miles from his cozy house, having left his pickup truck in a restaurant parking lot 6 blocks from where the van was parked.
No one could ever prove he flattened his own tire, but it certainly kept the van from being moved in a timely fashion.
Interesting that there are so many Democrats shooting out windows. Kind of makes gun control seem like an idea that Republicans can get behind, doesn't it? ;)
