Saw something odd on Fox news...

(of course if they were to suddenly become "fair and balanced" that would be REALLY odd, but this was odd in another way)

I have a small TV in my computer room that I listen to when on my computer- the tv has one problem, It displays closed captioning text and I cant turn off the captions. It isnt really a problem since I just listen to it mostly.... but one day about a week ago I was on the phone and muted the TV and saw the captions quoting Kerry talking about "YOUR RAIN YUM" He seemed to think it was a pretty important topic since he kept talking about "YOUR RAIN YUM" I turned it up and of course he was saying 'URANIUM" .

Now, my question is this- I cannot believe a human doing the captions would make that bad a mistake! I know most captions I see are typed by humans because i have seen typos... but this seemed like a mistake a computer would make. My understanding was that voice recognization programs needed to adapt to a given person's speech patterns before they could work. Did I miss a dramatic advancement? If the captioning for Fox was done by a computer it was doing a very good job, even with accents except that it was saying that Kerry like the taste of my rain.

Some captioning is too awful to be done by human or computer, I saw an episode of 'west wing' on Bravo that looked like it was captioned by an inebriated quadruplegic gibbon with advanced syphillus. It was impossible to understand. And I have seen numerous cases where the captions have said the exact opposite of what was being said on the tv audio- usually due to the omission of a word like 'not'. This is a minor inconvenience for people watching 'survivor' , but when watching a presidential debate it could be serious:

"I will hunt down the terrorists and kill them" becomes "I will hunt down the terrorists and kiss them"

It seems like only a half hearted and incompetent effort is being made to address the needs of the deaf... Turn on captions on your tv for a few hours and see what you think....
