Good question.

Is Bush getting any credit at all for the complete lack of attacks on America since 9/11? No? Then why assign blame if we are attacked?

To be honest, we don't know if the lack of attacks is due to great work on the part of Homeland Security, sheer luck, or maybe something else entirely. Credit or blame for a new attack would not be easy to assign. We're still struggling to figure out exactly where we went wrong with 9/11, and the commissions have passed out plenty of blame to go around.

In fact, the terrorists don't give a rat's ass who's in office. The 9/11 attacks were planned during the Clinton administration, and carried out during the Bush administration. I doubt anyone thinks al Qaeda would have called off the attempt if Gore had been elected. Or Ralph Nader, for that matter.

You can bet any terrorist attack plans under way right now would be attempted no matter who won the presidency. Let's just hope our defenses, luck, or whatever holds out. A week after 9/11, I would have bet--any odds you cared to name--that we would have been hit again before three years had gone by. There are methods that are literally unstoppable, if you can get a person to the right place at the right time.
