re: Predicting the future

One safe prediction is that climate changes will continue to occur just as it has through all of geologic time. The climate gets hotter then colder. The amount of precipitation increases and decreases. These changes will happen just as they always do. There is legitimate debate about the extent that human activities today are influencing climate change (despite what some are claiming, the debate is legitimate), but the fact remains that changes are going to happen.

Imagine what it must've been like as the end of the last major ice age ended some 10,000 years ago. Geologic evidence shows that there were major floods the likes of which we've never seen. Species migrated to new areas or became extinct, affecting hunting patterns. Somehow, despite all those massive climate changes and with virtually no technology as we know it, prehistoric humans not only survived, they thrived.

Will our descendants be able to adapt to changing conditions? I certainly hope so. I'd hate to think that humans have become so wussified that we can no longer adapt. Necessity is a mother.
