Escaping the energy limit
As Arthur notes, stars do this all the time. The trick is to interrupt the light of the star. If we're tlking about advanced civilisations at the Dyson sphere level, it would be fairly simple to arrange a morse-code style interruption of the star's light by orbiting plates. A flashing star would certainly attract attention, even if the "code" was neccesarily minimal.
