When someone jumps out from behind a tree, threatens you with a gun, and you manage to shoot him first, the problem isn't due to the fact that you didn't drop your gun and start a discussion.

What the "failure of diplomacy" fans won't accept is that there are some people walking this earth where a hundred years on the other side of a negotiating table are not going to find you common ground--a compromise between their insanity and your life and freedom. While negotiations over history have in some cases bought us a few more years of pretending the problem has gone away, eventually it ends up coming down to either military force or surrender.
