While I don't think any more of SAVAK than I do of Saddam's goons, and I do not believe that it pays off in the long to support dictatorships just to get "stability," you could make a pretty good case that if the Shah had managed to stay in power, there would never have been an "Islamic Revolution."

Much of Islamic terrorism was born from the hostage crisis back then.
