There are some old dams that are dangerous, and others that no longer serve the function they were intended to. But the motivation of many of the "tear down the dam" movements I have seen, especially here in California, distills down to "It isn't natural, and changes the landscape."
You tell me why hydroelectric has become "recently" bad, after being around for many decades.
Already we're seeing resistance to wind farms, too. It gets pretty hard to believe that for some environmentalists it isn't more about being anti-human than pro-environment.
Sometimes I think about the amazing works of civil engineering human beings have built in America over the past couple of centuries, and wonder how many would be here if the rabid environmental movement had been around back then.
There is a place for a rational environmental movement in any endeavor. And to be fair, the "Restore Hetch Hetchy" groups are more reasonable than many. But I'm still getting tired of a lot of our energy and other policies being set by people who are anti-capitalist, anti-Western, anti-technology, and in many cases, anti-humanity.
