My dad used to be one of the people in charge of pollution control for a major corporation, and it was his job to help the company meet the various and often arbitrary and unscientific rules. I used to hear horror stories like you wouldn't believe. One example: a requirement that discharge water actually be cleaner than natural river water, something that actually turned out to harm some animals.
While there was some reasonable success meeting with most state and Federal regulations, it seemed like nothing would satisfy certain activist groups, no matter what compromises or concessions were made.
I told him, it isn't because these peope don't want your corporation to clean up its act. They want your corporation dead, dead, dead.
If it makes you feel better, he didn't buy it any more than you do.
