FDR did his damnedest to create a massively-centralized collectivist government during his administration. The article I referenced indicated that he would have gone a lot further if he could have. His administration was packed with socialists, including a few that KGB documents indicate were actually working for the Soviet Union at the time.
I'm not talking about John Muir, here. I'm talking about people in power at the time like Harry White.
Someone in 1929 might be excused for thinking that collectivism would make the Earth a paradise. At least someone not living in the Soviet Union. Modern "progressives" don't have that excuse, at least if THEY are paying any attention to history.
To bring it back to today, there is a constant pressure for collectivist solutions to almost every social and economic problem the U.S. faces. In spite of titanic financial problems with current entitlements, Medicare far more than Social Security, a large number of Americans are pushing for the government to take over medical care for three hundred million Americans. Not just medical assistance for the poor--but total control.
I wouldn't mind seeing a little progress back toward the middle.

- As an expert in the field, can you tell me if there are right-wing bloggers
- Cheney, et al., touted a fictional al-Qaeda / Saddam link. And there's NO question about the others.
