remember, though -
And in capitalism, the excesses of which stem from human nature in the form of greed (WorldCom, Enron, etc., etc.) the contribution of labor has to be protected by law.
And they both have to be required, by law, to protect the source, good ol' Mother Earth.
Because neither is any good when allowed to run rampant over any of the others. Which, unregulated and unchecked, they will do.
- remember that all this can be regulated under capitalism too, both by law and vocal public opinion. Going the whole hog to complete socialist nationalization always seems to end up with bureacracy and dictatorship. Systems like Sweden are the best compromise for providing social services without going down dead-end ideological alleys.
Outright socialism could only ever work if democratic legal safeguards were heavily built into the system - and even that is no guarantee, since the USSR constitution under Stalin 'granted' complete democratic speech and organization to all citizens. To make that constitution worth more than toilet paper there would also have to be present. an active and vocal citizenry, who would have to be as vigilant and educated in their rights as people traditionally are in the US. This has never happened in a socialist or communist country and I really think history shows that 'experiment' is useless. Some sort of balanced, democratic hybrid of capitalism and socialism is the way to go ultimately, IMHO.
