blue and white collar, military, academic, government andprivate industry: both mom and pop shops and megacorporations.
The one thing all the good ones had in common, and none of the bad ones shared, was that management cared about their people, saw them as human beings with a value of their own (not just replaceable production modules). All the executive hygiene, management charm school crap and touchy-feely execubabble won't make up for a little respect. If you know your boss cares about you, you will bust your ass for him.
It's that simple. And although there are a lot of good bosses out there, perhaps even most of them, the system itself never seems to be able to incorporate it as policy.
