The mind is an integrator-- not a thinking machine. It performs wave arithmetic and generates an answer based upon what it has stored and the complexity of its frequency affiliations.
that holds for the act of hearing: once the audio signal is transformed into its electrical analog in the inner ear, that electrical signal is then directly transmiitted to the brain. The brain then does an instant Fourier analysis of the signal which transforms it from a signal based in time, into a complete 'map' of the sound's constituent frequencies. It's this 'map' of the sound's frequencies which enable us to feel and interpret the sound.
And then, as to what's going on at THAT level ..? That's a world of subtle unknowns, suitable for the sci-fi-type musings of 'SDAI Labs' and others ..
