I have no idea how they are getting samples of such things from a lake or any other body of water. Keep in mind that "no two snowflakes are the same," so how the hell would you have any "control" in this experiment?
Geez, I'm not even sure where to start with this. If you were going to do such an experiment, you would need a natural substance that changes, and is much less erratic than frozen water. One that is stable unless otherwise affected, and controls for the experiment to weed out environmental variables. Even then, there's usually common-sense answers to these things.
I remember the big "talking to plants" deal years ago. Some scientists theorized that people were just breathing more CO2 on the plants. The common-sense answer was that people who talk to their plants by definition tend to spend time noticing them. Such plants would be cared for more carefully, watered more frequently, watched for bugs, etc. Of course they would do better.
My plants often get watered only when they wilt or drop leaves on my head. Thank God for succulents. My yard is an exercise in Darwinism. My motto: if it's green, and you can mow it, it's a lawn.
