re: Monuments
The Eiffel tower was meant for the 1900 Paris world fair; The Atomium was meant for the 1958 Brussels World Fair.
Both monuments were meant to celebrate the industrial revolution (iron), both were meant to be destroyed after their World Fairs.....
and both are still there.
If they were to be destroyed, they'd probably be replaced by something more related to the era in which they'd be erected.
