If they were not rebuilt I think it would mainly it would be because there weren't the necessary craftsmen to recreate the originals.
The atomium is still relevant and in some ways seems timeless. The Eiffel tower is much more of a period piece.
Nowadays skyscrapers are high & risk-low return financial propositions.
