Besides being a very funny comedian, Carlin was fascinated by language, how it is used, misused and abused. He often spoke of how he came from a literate and articulate family that honored the English language, and he retained that fascination all his life, applying it systematically to his craft as an entertainer.
Anyone who listens to one of his comedy monologues, even those he delivers in dialect or slang, can't fail to notice how he not only uses the grammar and vocabulary to make his point, but he has mastered the rhythms and timing of American speech so that, like music, it also operates at another level altogether.
His act, was then rehearsed and rehearsed until every pause, every gesture, every facial expression was calculated to further what he was trying to communicate. He was a formidable man, loved and hated by many. He will be missed.
