I've seen too many women who really have their shit together fall for real flaming asshole dudes.

I believe men are programmed by evolution to propagate their DNA by impregnating as many young and healthy women as possible (read "pretty"). Men can theoretically produce one offspring per day for a large part of their lives, potentially, thousands in all. Although culture puts severe restrictions on this kind of monkey behavior, the biological wiring is still in place. This is why men are not by nature monogamous. They either have to make an intellectual comittment to be that way, or be intimidated by cultural constraints to be that way.

Women, on the other hand, can produce at most a dozen or two offspring during a lifetime. Their reproductive strategy is not to create as many children as possible, but to build social and psychological bonding with powerful and influential men in the community who can protect and promote their kids. Whether or not those men are actually the fathers of their children is totally irrelevant.

Women further their reproductive success by forming strong family bonds, building alliances, exploiting cultural and social curbs on male behavior and if possible, seeking out men who have a position of power and influence over other men. Her parents know this too. This is why we have dowries. You have to buy your grandchildren into good families.

But like many other lizard brain activities, it doesn't always work the same way in different women, and sometimes it doesn't work well at all, particularly in times like the present when cultural signals can be confusing or rapidly changing. Very often the high school football hero will not grow up to be a good provider, and the bad boy with the pompadour and turned up collar may never run a business or a household as effectively as he bosses around his fellow JD gang memebers. Violent, arrogant behavior and brutality can easily be mistaken for courage and determination, boldness and innovation. And lust can always be mistaken for love.

A lot of times women make bad choices because they are attracted to alpha males, and they forget that most human societies are herds, not wolf packs. Men make the same kind of mistakes too. Weak men prefer frail, quiet, meek little women, especially if they look like skinny twelve year olds with big breasts. This is why womens clothes and makeup tend to emphasize their frailness and delicacy. Have you ever noticed how the fashion models always pout, and how they have no real hips? Just like kids.

Don't get me started on this. When you look at humans as what they really are, apes, they're not so pretty.
