He's read too much. When you read you get exposed to new and old viewpoints.
We could have stayed out of WWII. We could have hung the British out to dry and not violated our neutrality.
The world would be vastly different today, but would it be worse? Who can say?
Germany might've conquered Europe and their would be no France, Belgium or Spain? Would that be so bad?
It's likely there would've been a new triple detente: Russia-Germany-United States starting in 1950 had we stayed neutral.
Hitler would never have made it over here. There's a more than likely probability that he would've been assassinated sooner than later and new leadership would emerge.
We may never have developed the nuclear bomb. A device which looks like its still slated to someday wipe out large portions of humanity from the earth.
I, myself, have read hundreds of articles penned during the thirties about why we should not take sides in Europe's endless wars. Most of the ones were quite rational and well-reasoned. Many were of the same tact and tone as why we stayed out of Europes mess in Yugoslavia.
Would Hitler and Nazism have taken over the Earth?
Who knows? We see how difficult it is to hold territory after one has acquired it. Looking at the demographics I think Germany would've maxed out and only been capable of holding France, Belgium, Austria and Poland. Realistically, England, Spain and Italy would've been out of the Reich's reach in terms of sustainability.
It's likely Nazism would've been reformed along the same lines as Catholicism or Communism. The days where the blood flows freely would be toned down into a sustainable political empire that assimilates those it has conquered.
So we would've seen even many more refugees from Europe in the period between 1940-1950.
Russia would've never obtained the missile-techs from Peenemunde. They would never have successfully imported Communism to China or the Koreas. Chiang Kai Shak would still have ruled a far more benign China.
The cold war would now be between Germany and the US. We would've built up our submarine and ship fleets to help secure the seas around our borders.
The Germans would likely have continued their rocket program and perfected jet aircraft. The US would likely have engaged in more espionage to obtain the plans for those rockets and jets, since we wouldn't have Wernher out at White Sands building our missile and jet program from scratch.
It is all too easy due to familiarity with the status quo to assume that things are better because the US took sides.
However it is quite possible the world would still be nuke free and we would've engaged in a few more bloody wars in the meanwhile.
Perhaps our space program would've truly been a space program and not just a dummy agency named NASA, for PR reasons, subject to veto by the DOD.
A new geopolitic would surely have evolved with countless curses and blessings. Bringing death to millions and yet also saving other millions.
It is likely billions would've been spared the communist experiment.
The world always seeks balance. German aggression would've eventually been checked and a new balance would emerge. Clearly the US would not have owned the twentieth century though.
Then again there's a good chance that the US would've then owned the 21st century next to a declining Germany & Soviet Union.
Who's to say Pat isn't on to something?
