We could also keep some shuttle type craft with such a system.
The space shuttles have proven themselves useful when it comes to space construction and repair missions, as well as returning payloads from orbit. By placing the main engines under the ET, we separate the orbiter and the launch vehicle, and turn it into just another payload to be carried aloft by the new ET derived HLV. This would be very useful IMO.
