I agree that the idea of this particular kind of fusion being a practical power source is iffy, although you aren't going to find out if you don't give it a shot.
My point is that the waste issue is a red herring. Anything that generates sufficient power for a technological civilization will generate waste. I prefer my waste tucked neatly in tight packages onto small reservations far out in the desert, not spewed into the air and water.
