re: I have given up....

"I believe we need to stop burning hydrocarbons as fuels, for three primary reasons.

In rough order of importance:

1. Oil and natural gas aren't going to last forever, and there are already signs of this."

There are huge quanities of methane hydrate in the oceans. This should be possible to mine economically. And I don't buy that there is shortage of oil in this world. We have at least 50 years more of cheap oil- and 50 to 60 dollar a barrel is cheap. Over $100 per barrel isn't cheap- though accounting for inflation in 50 years, oil at $100 will be cheap. I think that over $50 per barrel of crude will allow other sources of energy to be found and for this reason I suspect that oil prices will drop below this.
I think that Japan and is perfectly happy to be dependent upon foreign sources of oil, but I don't think China will be want to be so dependent, they going to find someway to be more independent in regards to oil needs. I imagine they will focus on nuclear energy and coal liquidification in short to medium term. And Space in longer term.

"2. Too much of our oil comes from places where politics is a serious problem."

You mean Canada and Mexico?

"3. We shouldn't be dumping so many exhaust products into the atmosphere. And believe me, CO2 ain't the only one."

Cleaner coal burning power plants could be good solution to this problem- especially in places like China. And of course, more nuclear reactors are needed.
