This is one of those "everybody knows" things, but nobody has ever actually explained exactly how thousands of defeated armed men standing around was going to help things.
We are told we were stupid to expect the civilians to greet us with flowers (they did), but somehow you expect the soldiers to suddenly start taking orders from us instead of the Baathists? Start controlling looters just because we tell them to?
This meme comes up in DoD press conferences, and the military guy giving the conference just sort of stares at the reporter.
"You know, MacArthur, rebuilding Japan would have been a lot easier if you'd kept their army intact." Right.
We are going to have enough trouble as it is with insurgent ringers in the Army building it up again from scratch.
Again, no liberal has ever really explained this. It's just one of those regurgitated anti-war bits.
