It's easy to chant the "more troops" mantra...

except when you look at the size of the military and their other commitments. Simply put, the military was reduced by about 30% during the 1990s (starting under Bush 41 in 1992). There are still thousands of troops serving in Afghanistan, about 30,000 in Korea, thousands in the former Yugoslav republics, and others pulling duty around the world. There simply aren't enough troops to go around, never mind pulling thousands more out of our ass to send to Iraq above what is there now.

When a unit gets deployed to a combat zone, it takes time for them to "work up" for deployment (refresher training, logistics support, preparing for transport, etc). Once they've returned, it takes months to refurbish equipment, rest & recouperate, and get ready to do it all over again. You can only deploy a certain percentage of a military force at a time if you have to sustain operations. That's just a fact of military life.
