I'm not okay with that concept. What you failed to realize then, and still hasn't sunk in a year later, was that Aznar would have had a much better chance of winning IF HE HAD PLAYED IT STRAIGHT.
Instead Aznar tried to weasel out of it. He was already unpopular for the war in Iraq, but not enough for him to lose.
After Madrid, he could have come clean and pegged it on the likely suspect - Al Qaeda. He didn't. He lied and tried to blame ETA.
I fully suspect that if he had told the truth he would be commanding from a position of strength and he may have won. Aznar screwed up.
