It seems many oppose going round in orbit as it's been done for years.
But that was the purpose of the shuttle: to achieve easy access to space.
Instead, it killed twice and never became cost effective.
The Apollo program succeeded and stopped because it wasn't attracting the public anymore.
So, here we are, with pro-space fans not wanting to go around the world anymore and pro-space fans not wanting flag and footprints anymore.
The point also is: who can pretend a beter kind of manned shuttle won't be as expensive to develope and dangerous to use and who can pretend going to Mars won't be flag and footprints either?
Maybe what we'll end up with are rich tourists in ballistic flights and all the rest of space left to robots.
That is the natural trend of space exploration. Sustained politics could change this but everyone must agree on and support a more ambitious role for humans.
