If you look at pictures of STS-1 and STS-2 you will notice that the ET is white. That's because the ET was painted then. It added considerable weight, but I'm wondering if anyone knows if it would prevent foam from breaking off. Of course if it did break off with paint on it, it would probably be more likely to cause damage to the TPS.
