The Taliban took control of the government. There's the difference.

Take a look at some of the teachings of more extreme Christian sects, concerning obedience to the man. Take a look at the number of women who are beaten in the US in order for the men in their lives to "control" them. Yet you would not judge all Christians based on them.

Muslim women whom I have known -- more than you might think, and some of them converts from Christianity -- have told me that, in Islam, women are in control of the income and family property that they bring with them to the marriage, and that any man who divorces his wife divorces that income as well. They therefore have more autonomy than the average Christian woman, whose property becomes jointly owned unless an explicit prenuptual agreement is signed. They are well-educated, cultured people who have strong opinions that they are not afraid to act on. Just like mainstream members of other major religions.

The lesson here is not that Islam is primitive, because it isn't. The lesson is that some Muslims are abusive curs. No surprise: abusive curs turn up all over.

The second lesson is, don't let religious groups take over your government. No good ever comes from it.
