The Bush campaign made use of a 'push poll' against McCain implying that he had fathered an out of wedlock black child, that his wife was a drug addict, and that he was a basket case from his torture in vietnam... All absolute lies, but it worked. The fact that McCain and his wife had adopted a girl from Bangledesh was used against McCain because when bigoted right wing voters saw that he had a dark skin child it added creedence to the 'out of wedlock' lie...
