I hope this is the non-problem you seem to feel. Personally I take no comfort in seeing two historical enemies joining together for any purpose. If they were to focus on the internal problems you mention in your post that would be good for the US position. That they draw together for any purpose doesn't effect their internal problems, but it does overshadow them for their populations and diverts attention to their differences.
