Try considering supply and demand

The demand isn't likely to go down much anytime soon but supply just took a beating. I heard on the radio today that some 8 refineries in the affected area had to shut down. What do you think they should've done, try operating during a hurricane? A lot of the domestic oil production comes from the Gulf of Mexico, perhaps as much as 25%. People scream when you try to drill for oil just about anywhere else - they want their oil but don't want to have oil wells. On top of that, a lot of natural gas production also comes from the region. On top of all that, several major terminals for offloading oil and LNG tankers are in the impacted regions. Some of them may be out of operation for a while.

So, if you want to rant, try directing it at the NIMBY types who won't let oil and gas wells be drilled, or who block refinery construction. Sure as hell, when you put that much of our energy infrastructure in an area prone to hurricanes, sooner or later this was bound to happen. Ranting won't do a damned thing to help, either.
