We are insensitive louts
First I must say that I believe we have a responsibility to save lives and give comfort regardless of the circumstances. If those at risk are stupid or uneducated or irresponsible we must still do everything in our power to save them and make it better for them in the future.
In the current exchange, the difference in me and our more liberal friends is that I am fairly certain that you agree with paragraph one. You and sometimes I have a problem with saying things in a way that is perceived as too glib, too curt and god help us, insensitive. The devil makes us do it.
Best to cut your losses. Real or perceived insensitivity always loses against real or perceived sensitivity.
