Yes, cats are very loyal. More loyal than anything I've ever had.
It's tough to lose them at a ripe old age. They are psychic creatures who often just share emotions with us.

I adopted one a few months back. Actually she adopted ME.
Walked right into the establishment where I was working and started talking to me. Back paw up, front paw out...like a hunting dog. I quickly led her outside with some milk, but she'd have nothing to do with that. She was TALKING to me, followed me back in. And she was intelligent, she listened to me. Not being able to figure out what she wanted from me, I figured the best thing I could do was to throw her in my car and bring her home with me. She has adapted well to the household and is doing well.... being trained like the big cats in the circus. I still don't know what she wanted, but she seems happy to be here. All black with white paws and a white bib and gotee.

I call her Shadow.
