Summing up:
The war is reaching a critical point. Al Qaeda has taken major hits in the northwest, losing possibly 80 percent of its capacity in some areas.
A massive retaliation, targeted specifically at Shiite civilians, was launched.
The Sunnis are coming around to the political process. There is warfare between Sunnis and terrorists in the west.
I will know a lot more when I see what happens before the elections. It will tell me the breadth of al Qaeda's capacity, and the status of the supply lines. Won't know until then.
The U.S. military casualty rate through October will also be instructive. A trend appears to be developing, especially considering the high combat rate, but it's way too soon to call it.
Put it this way: Whatever we've got now isn't victory yet, but it sure ain't a quagmire.
