As Raoul said, it's from a sci-fi show.
While the show itself, Space: 1999, was rather lame and pretty far out there, some of the spacecraft designs were pretty spot on. They were designed as flying crane type vehicles. The middle section could be replaced with a whole assortment of different mission modules. And as you can see from the pictures, assembly and repair would be fairly straight forward due to their modular design.
