Cool, Raoul

I should've figured you'd already have the discs, Raoul, and somehow I'm not really suprised to learn that you have 500 videocasettes in your space collection. I understand how it is--I don't have that many videos, but I've managed to collect hundreds of thousands of still images over the years. We're just space pack rats.

I watched most of disc 1 of Gemini last night, and loved it...Ed White's spacewalk, the rendezvous of 6 and 7, Neil's Wild Ride on 8, dancing with Agenas, Buzz's spacewalk that finally gets it right. I like the fact that it was a "low-budget" production, in the sense that it was all genuine archival materials, no kindergarten-level computer animations, no highly-paid celebrity host whose contract requires that he get face time that distracts from the meat of it. Just the genuine film and soundtrack as they happened, with a straightforward narration.

You can tell that these discs are for connoiseurs. After the feature there are the miscellaneous clips that only a space cadet could enjoy, like half an hour of silent film of somebody wearing an astronaut's glove manipulating the Gemini control panel. That must've been a time-and-motion study, what we call ergonomics these days, and it was weirdly interesting to be able to study the control panels up close and personal, and appreciate little design details like the shaving mirror on an articulated arm that tucks out of the way when not in use.

(You already know what's on the disc, Raoul, that's just my review for everybody else.)

As it stands I have 14 more discs to watch...then I guess it's back to Amazon for all the rest!
