A successful local businessman from this region had for decades given like crazy to all kinds of charities. He was active in his church, he volunteered in the community, he was by all accounts a good guy, a fine family man and an upright citizen.
He was convicted of fraud and money laundering.
He tried the "I'm a good guy, and look at all the wonderful stuff I've done in my life" plea at the sentencing hearing. A former deputy director of the CIA even wrote a letter of support, extolling his patriotism. (He had also been engaged in illegal weapons trade on behalf of assorted US government agencies.)
They threw the book at him anyway. They figured that he had broken the law.
How about that? You can't really put your good deeds in the bank as some kind of "get out of jail free" card. Sometimes justice is not for sale.
Current Events » in reply to "They pay in other ways"??? What garbage.
