Gimme a break
The titular head of the Republican Party, your George W. Bush, advocates teaching Creationism in the schools; the same George W. Bush whose administration actively undermines science for political gain by altering scientific studies and stuffing scientific panels with industry hacks. It's your Republican Congress who shamelessly exploited Terri Schiavo to pander to the religious Right.
This is not an isolated incident, not the unsanctioned actions of a rogue Republican fringe group. It is the official policy of your Republican Party to substitute fundamentalist religious beliefs for science wherever possible.
