Not trying to start a war here...

...and I know that when it comes to science and engineering I'm just a wannabe, but I can't help but think EP (heretical or not) may be right about this:

What the nation would pay for is CAPS...

When Joe or Josephine Taxpayer start asking what they're getting for their NASA buck, I'm not sure a few makeshift buildings on the moon or even Mars is gonna fly for very long. Yeah personally I think going into space is the right thing to do for humanity, but I stopped saying that a long time ago because of the looks I got.

But happenstance puts us in a time of $200 billion natural disasters and we've seen how hollow and unhelpful the words "who figured it would ever actually happen?" can be.

I'm not suggesting we try to scare the public into funding NASA, but I think they'd be able to see actual value, to themselves and their children, from an effort to protect the planet from what would be an unimaginable natural disaster.

I don't know what the "odds were" on a tsunami like the one we saw last year, or on New Orleans being inundated, but clearly there were people in positions of authority who found such odds acceptable. Maybe the stats were in our favor, maybe not, but we rolled the dice and lost.
