For some reason, beaurecratic conservatism probably, 21st century mission plans eschew ion or VASIMR drives. Look at Mercury Messenger, an ideal situation for a solar powered ion engine. Instead, we chose the 10 year mission plan.

Is VASIMR still alive even in the lab mode?
