I can't find much recent information about VASIMR
The most recent articles I found were from 2002. That isn't a good sign. This new technology might be better than VASIMR for all I know. I like multiple approaches to the problem of long duration continuous thrust. Perhaps VASIMR had some fatal flaws, perhaps its funding was diverted to other projects, perhaps it's still in development somewhere. I don't know.
