The new data on impacts is consistent with the late Gene Shoemaker's final estimate as to the impact hazard, which senior NASA management has carefully concealed from the House space subcommitee. Senior NASA management has repeatedly entered into sworn testimony Shoemaker's much earlier estimates of the impact hazard, which were much lower, and have never corrected that testimony to either subcomittee. It is really too bad that Shoemaker died in that auntomobile accident, as if he had of lived he would have quickly set this matter straight.
I don't know if concealment of this type amounts to perjury, but then senios NASA mangement could also be fired for warning the head of the JPL NEO office not to talk about mitigation. I don't see how any of these people could ever justify any of these instructions as being in the public's interest.
The Langley engineering team came up with the best possible current solution for dealing with the impact hazard as it is best known. The last time NASA management did not listen to the Langley engineers thay lost Columbia. Some of NASA management should be fired for suppressing that Langley study.
I hope that the conferee's pass the language of the Brown ammendment, instead of the Senate language.
But either language would bring to a quick end what has been going on.
A small formality
