Sometimes politicians have to choose their battles knowing that they have to bank power for a more important one coming down the pike. That concept doesn't exactly set right with me but I'm not in their shoes.
You're cutting them an awful lot of slack, but I guess that's your privilege. Someone else might say their political views pretty much depend on what they think will get them elected at any given time. This is why there are so many marvelous quotes from Democrats showing complete contradictions with later positions.
I didn't say that the war in Iraq was the major reason we weren't getting attacked, although it seems to be absorbing a lot of al Qaeda's forces right now. There are many other fronts that have made a serious dent in their forces, including Afghanistan, not to mention anti-terror operations in other countries, and the many police and financial offensives that have dealt with many domestic cells in Europe and elsewhere.
The idea that al Qaeda simply doesn't want to attack the U.S. doesn't stand up very well, considering that at least three attacks have been prevented since 9/11.
