Maybe it's time for churches to start having atheist guest speakers come in once a month to debunk much of the crap that gets put out in churches and point out the parts that seem to get left out of sermons. Not that I'm holding my breath for this to ever happen since there seems to be this real paranoia in Christian churches to shed light on their interpretation of religious texts and history.
Wouldn't it be interesting if the majority of Christians actually knew that many of the compelling tales of Christ's life were almost word for word ripoffs of early Pagan, Egyptian, and Buddhist tales such as virgin birth in a stable, crucifixion, resurrection, etc. Might make a few wonder if the man ever existed or was simply a tale created to bind the power of the early church. I have to wonder back to my early formative years when I was shuttled off to Sunday School where such information wasn't included in my indoctrination to religious studies, only the cryptic selected passages from the Bible that tended to reinforce the doctrine of the church. I tend to believe I would've truly questioned those beliefs much earlier had I had a more complete picture of the history.
Recent evidence also seems to point out that Jesus may actually have existed in a mere mortal sense and was a true heir to the crown of Israel displaced by the Roman occupation. If that's true, it explains many of the strange inconsistencies in tales of his life and the reason for his title "King of the Jews". Christian churches would relegate ideas such as this as blasphemy and the work of the devil in trying to confuse and shake the faith of believers. That's a classic tactic of insecure people in a debate, to paint their opponents with an evil or twisted brush.
There are other huge gaps in the story of Christ and religion as a whole that, without the huge peer pressure of everyone around you including your own parents and relatives bearing down on you, would be extremely difficult to reconcile to a young and absorbent mind. I don't know now if a historical Jesus existed but the evidence seems overwhelming that if he did, he was in no way this spiritual being born of a sky fairy.
My guess is you don't want atheists "preaching" to you because it's too disturbing to hear common sense that violates something you want very much to be right.

Most of the atheists I've known know more about Christianity than the Christians do.
