I think this down sizing of Ford is a great idea, it should have been done years ago. Ford needs to build fewer lines of cars that the public wants instead of building cars just to fill the factories. Build limited select cars that people want with attention to quality and matbe they can rebuild confidence in the public.
I've had excellent service from my last Fords. All of them were traded in or sold with over 150,000 miles and I only had to rebuild one transmission (89 truck) at around 100,000 miles and all the others just needed the basic brakes, tune-ups and clutch replacements if applicable.
I religiously change my oil, filters, rotate the tires, etc. at 5,000 miles and baby them, but my work trucks take a beating hauling heavy loads, driven by hurried workers and still hold up without any major work needed also, so I'm satisfied with Ford. Maybe I've just been lucky, but our current Fords have been great with no worries at over 50,000 mile each.
I just took delivery of a new 2006 GT Mustang 4.6L 310HP manual 5 speed with a custom package setup authorized by Ford and still covered by Ford warrantee.
Lowered 2 inches with a suspension package.
20" Boss wheels with low profile tires. 10" wide on the rear 8" in front.
Hood scoop, custom rear spoiler and painted racing stripes bumper to bumper.
Custom grille with larger fog lamps.
Louvered side rear window covers and tinted windows.
Complete Flow Master exhaust system.
I only get to drive it on the weekends as my wife is living in it. So far she gets 19.8 miles to the gallon on average which is just under what she gets from her 02 6 cylinder Explorer and her lead foot. Of course we weren't looking for an economy car, but it's not a gas hog either (when driven sane). We won't count the first tank. ;-)
We decided to buy something fun, to have fun in while doing our road trips and it just happen to be a Ford.
