There are many things I would change if it were within my power, first and foremost the cult of secrecy that's grown up around the government no matter who's holding power at the moment. When the government withholds or distorts information, it gives other people, like whoever started this almost-hoax, more latitude to work their damage as well. Secrecy spreads like cancer, and it is the antithesis of democracy, and the less we have of it the better.
But it's utopian dreaming to imagine that we can ever eliminate pathological secretiveness from government. The best we can do is fiercely defend freedom of speech and freedom of the press, and then accept that ultimately it's up to us to check the facts and come to our own conclusions.
As we did here. Freedom and democracy are doing better here than in many other places in the outside world.
