I was picturing an inflatable disk shaped object for such an experiment. Keeping it in an orbit where the shadow sits over one area for a few hours would be the hard part. Thinking about the size of Shadow Phobos leaves on Mars might helps us visualize how wide this disk would have to be.

The Sun is warming as it ages. Without intervention, there Earth will become uninhabitable long before the Sun burns out. I have seen figures that this will happen from 10,000 years to a billion years from now.

I only see three ways humans could solve this problem. Cool the Sun off with some stellar engineering, move the Earth, or cut the amount of solar ration reaching the Earth.

The third option seems the least daunting, and it could be done with some kind of solar shade. And, as a side benefit, such technology could help humans terraform Venus.
